Two characters are presents in this extract from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë : the narrator, Lockwood and Heathcliff. They are in Yorshire, England, more precisely at wuthering Heights.
It is in the 1840, in the winter at night.
-First, the narratos felt annoyed (=agacé) beacause a branch was tapping at the window and couldn't sleep. Secondly, he felt horrified, terrified because he touched an ice-cold outside the window. Then he was surprised, stunned because he saw a child's face outside. He was scared to see a ghost. After that he was mischievous (=malicieux, malhonnête) with the child as he pretexted he wanted to help her. Once he was free, he was heartless, cruel as he hurt the child with the window pare. Finally he left frightened : he screamed.
Catherine Linton is represented as a child in the scene. She has a melancholy voice, she's sad (she is sobbing, crying). She is cold (she is shivering, shaking). She has been dead for 20 years.
She is compared to a waif, a gobblin, a fiend. This is Mr Lockwood's opinion which is totally opposed to Heathcliff's opinion.
Heathcliff loves Catherine. She is dear to him.
At the beginning he is furious when he sees Ms Lockwood in this room.
Then when he learns that Cathy has come back and missed her he feels brokenhearted, desperate and in a shock.
-We can suppose that Cathy died out of sadness : Cathy may have died out of sadness.
-She probably got lost on the moor, fell ill and died : She may have got lost on the moor, fallen ill and died.
-She fell ill and couldn't be cured : She may have fallen ill and doctors may not have been able to cure her.
I can = I'am able to
